Elizabeth Twining Almshouses now Featured on the Passive House Database

Our Elizabeth Twining Almshouses project in Richmond is now proudly listed on the Passive House Database. This certified Passive House new build demonstrates that high-performance energy efficiency can be achieved without compromising accessibility or aesthetics, offering a sustainable future for elderly residents with limited means.

The project consists of five terraced homes, built with a treated floor area of 281 m² using timber construction. Key technical highlights include:

  • Airtightness: n50 = 0.5/h, ensuring minimal heat loss.

  • Annual heating demand: Only 16 kWh/m²a, delivering ultra-low heating costs.

  • Thermal performance: Exterior wall U-value of 0.097 W/m²K, roof U-value of 0.089 W/m²K, and floor slab U-value of 0.093 W/m²K.

  • Heating system: Powered by Kensa ground-source heat pumps, with underfloor heating and domestic hot water integration.

  • Ventilation: Zehnder ComfoAir 160 HRV with an 89% heat recovery rate, ensuring excellent air quality and energy efficiency.

  • Renewable energy: Solar panels on the green roof generate 30 kWh/m²a, with electricity stored in individual batteries for each home.

These homes not only meet Passive House standards but also provide a financial lifeline for residents by reducing energy bills and promoting year-round comfort.

We’re proud to have delivered this forward-thinking project alongside Clive Chapman Architects and Zero Energy Passivhaus, showcasing Buxton’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in construction.
