Sonny Davies - Buxton Building Work Experience

I began my work experience with Buxton in February 2024, aiming to complete 45 placement days as part of my T Level course at college. With no prior experience in construction, I started on the Master Park project in Oxted, Surrey, where a sports pavilion was being built. My site safety was well managed; I was provided with PPE and thoroughly inducted by the Project Manager.

As I am interested in pursuing a career in Civil and Structural Engineering, I was keen to learn more about the pavilion's structural designs. The PM frequently answered my questions about the engineers' drawings, giving me valuable insight into the role of engineers in designing construction projects.

Next, I worked on the Notre Dame School extension in Cobham, Surrey, an engaging project that required precise construction to link two sections of the school. I also helped measure ground levels using a rotating level and staff.

My final project was the refurbishment of Grosvenor Gardens, the most complex task due to the building's Grade II listing I gained an understanding of how crucial the use of temporary works is and how to transfer datums through each room and floor of a building.

Completing this work experience helped secure my T Level qualification in Summer 2024 and contributed to my successful application for a degree apprenticeship as a Civil Engineer with the global consultancy Atkins Réalis.

Would I recommend work experience at Buxton Building? Absolutely!
