#NAW2024 - Day 1 - Adam Gent

NATIONAL APPRENTICE WEEK

I am four months into my quantity surveying degree apprenticeship with Buxton and Kingston University. It has proven to be an invaluable blend of academic work and practical application. The real-world nature of the programme has allowed me to use theoretical knowledge gained at Kingston University with hands-on experiences at Buxton Building. The academic support from Kingston University has complemented my on-the-job learning, providing an understanding of the intricacies of quantity surveying in such a short amount of time. For example, I am currently studying the Quantification of Construction Works, building my understanding in measurements, which I have recently been able to apply to my on-the-job learning whilst assisting a colleague on site.

At Buxton Building, I have been involved in the procurement process of a new project, where I have been contacting subcontractors and comparing their quotes, gaining an insight into all the different responsibilities and jobs they must undertake to complete a project, which I find very interesting. Regular interactions with experienced colleagues and being involved in live projects with different challenges has enhanced my understanding of the construction industry and has resulted in me already beating some of my peers at university who didn’t have the opportunity to do an apprenticeship. Overall, I am very grateful for this opportunity, and I am excited to continue this journey and build my career in this profession.
