Elizabeth Twining Almshouses, 1-5 Mitre Mews

To mark the completion of the Elizabeth Twining Almshouses, The Richmond Charities hosted an open afternoon, bringing together the key contributors and stakeholders who played an integral role in the project. Representatives from the designers, Buxton’s construction team, local authority members, trustees, and neighbouring residents gathered to reflect on the project's journey and its positive impact on the local community.

The event offered attendees an opportunity to tour the newly completed space, engage with the teams involved, and share feedback and aspirations for its future use. This gathering not only marked the successful conclusion of the project but also celebrated the collective effort and shared commitment to creating a sustainable and welcoming environment for all.

Buxton Building Contractors is proud to announce the completion of the new almshouses at 1-5 Mitre Mews, developed with The Richmond Charities. This transformative project provides five fully wheelchair-accessible homes built to PassivHaus standards, ensuring exceptional energy efficiency, comfort, and reduced running costs for residents.

Sustainability was at the heart of the development, with innovative features such as ground source heat pumps, which use eco-friendly technology to provide efficient heating and cooling. Our construction team, led by Michael Pointing and Josh Evans, achieved Passive House Tradesperson certification, highlighting their commitment to sustainable building practices.

David Norman, Managing Director of Buxton, said:

"These homes reflect our dedication to quality, sustainability, and community impact. We are honoured to work with The Richmond Charities on a project that will benefit residents for generations to come."

This development increases The Richmond Charities’ almshouse portfolio from 145 to 162 homes, continuing their 400-year tradition of supporting over-65s in housing and financial need.

The Elizabeth Twining Almshouses stand as a testament to collaboration, innovation, and community care – values that drive Buxton to create meaningful change through construction.
