Hi, my name is Ben Marshall, I started my career at Buxton in 2018 as an apprentice Quantity Surveyor and I have just completed my HNC, I am now applying to Kingston University.
I am really enjoying working at Buxton and feel I have learnt a lot about the construction industry already. I’m very grateful for being given the opportunity to work, study and to be paid for it at the same time! I have already had a lot of experience working within different teams across the Buxton business and have had the chance to contribute to the various projects I have been involved with.
The two main projects I have worked on are Vanston Place, which was a new build residential and The Imperial War Museum which is a refurbishment project. Working on two completely different projects has really helped develop my understanding of the Surveyors role and my overall knowledge of the construction industry.
As part of my apprenticeship it is important for me to understand the whole process of a project which is why at Buxton, trainees spend a year rotating around the company. This involves spending time in other departments such as Buying, Estimating, Site Management and Accounts.
I am currently into my second month working as a Buyer and can see how the important this role is. As a member of the Buying team, I have helped with a joinery package for high end apartments in Chelsea.
This has been exciting as I have been able to meet the joinery contractor at their workshop and see samples of their work, I am looking forward to seeing the finished result.
My overall experience with Buxton has been extremely positive, everyone has been friendly and supportive making me feel very welcome within the business. I am excited to begin my degree.
