Ben Barber’s QS Apprenticeship Journey

I am five months into my apprenticeship in quantity surveying with Buxton, whilst also studying for my degree at Kingston University. The experience has been extremely positive on both fronts.

Working at Buxton has given me the opportunity to visit a wide variety of building sites and gain firsthand experience of construction. This has complemented my university studies well, as I can often gain a deeper understanding of the concepts I’m learning by seeing them in practice on site or in the office. For example, I have just started a new module at university on the quantification of construction works.

As part of the final assignment for this module, I will need to produce a Bill of Quantities, which is something I have already used and produced at work. This allows me to apply the knowledge I’ve picked up at Buxton to my studies at university.

Whilst working at Buxton, I have been involved in a variety of tasks, both work-related and from university. Each has its own unique set of challenges. However, completing these tasks has been made easier by having experienced and knowledgeable colleagues who are always happy to help and provide guidance.

This support has allowed me to enhance my skill set, improve my grades, and develop a better understanding of the construction industry and my profession.

Overall, I would highly recommend the degree apprenticeship route to anyone, particularly the opportunities Buxton offers.
