I am currently in my second year at Buxton Building Contractors and Kingston University, working as a trainee Quantity Surveyor. In this short time, I have gained valuable experience and knowledge within the construction industry.

Working on live projects alongside my academic studies has been incredibly beneficial, enabling me to achieve high marks in my assignments and stay a step ahead of my peers at university who didn’t have the opportunity to do an apprenticeship. For example, my on-the-job experience has allowed me to see various types of substructures, which ties directly into my Construction Technology module at university. This hands-on exposure has helped me apply what I’m learning to real-life situations, deepening my understanding of the module.
Through my apprenticeship, I’ve also been introduced to a wide range of opportunities within the construction industry. I’ve had the chance to work with estimators, site managers, subcontractors, and other key professionals, learning from their expertise and gaining insight into their experiences.
I have now taken on greater responsibilities within procurement and have had the opportunity to work on several projects from start to finish. This has given me a better understanding of the different stages of a project and the importance of staying on track with critical paths.
Overall, I am very grateful for this opportunity, and I am excited to continue this journey and build my career in this profession.
